The book How Will We Get to the Beach?: A Guessing Game Story by Brigitte Luciani and Eve Tharlet is a dog-eared favorite in our house. This is one of those simple story books that has so many jumping off points for learning.
In the story, a young mother decides to go to the beach with her baby boy. She loads up the car with the five things she absolutely must have with her, but the car won’t start. The rest of the story consists of the mother finding new forms of transportation, each one of which is suitable for four of her items but not a fifth, and the reader is asked each time to guess which item is missing. They finally get to the beach and have a lovely time, and the story ends with a picture of the almost empty beach. My children are delighted every time to see that they’ve left one very small item behind!
This book fits perfectly in transportation units as well as those studying the beach. It also provides fun jumping off points for problem solving skills practice. I also appreciate its underlying theme of never giving up even when things aren’t going your way.
